| Biography: David Nelson Wilson possesses a rare talent. He makes the violin sound cool. Henry Mancini thought so. He called David a “one of a kind”. On hearing him perform, Mr. Mancini right then and there asked David to record for him - solo tracks on two of his final album projects.
What makes David’s violin sound so different? Well maybe because he “plays it like a wind player” - according to famous music arranger Artie Butler. (As a matter of fact, David is also an accomplished brass player, preferring the flugelhorn.) Also one of Wilson’s all time favorite instrumentalists is Paul Desmond (Dave Brubeck’s better half). As with Paul Desmond’s alto, melodies flow forth with a gliding, effortless grace; highlighted with bursts of beautiful expansive passion. Always “smooth as butter.” Like Desmond, David’s tone and phrasing is unique and immediately recognizable.
Album sales approach a quarter million units. Listeners “get it”. In live performance David utilizes his varied musical past to display a comfortable familiarity with blues, classical, jazz, and contemporary genres. Though primarily performing with his violin, he also offers to the audience stints at the piano, flugelhorn, accordion, and, if the setting is right, an occasional vocal number. Shows are well rounded, well rehearsed, and highly entertaining. The audience is treated to the romantic standards of Gershwin and Porter, original renditions of hits by Elvis and Dean Martin, jazz - both mainstream and original, Latin bossa novas, and sumptuous European torch songs and waltzes.
